About Pantone Printing

Our uncoated textured cards and flyers range from 300 (flyers)-400gsm (business cards). As we offer a range of textures and coloured stock, Pantone (not CMYK process) printing is used to ensure quality results. Please keep in mind Pantone colours will not vary print to print on white stock, however colours will dramatically vary on coloured stock.  For this reason we recommend only printing  871 U Gold & 877U Silver (metallic inks) on coloured stock.

Difference between Pantone & CMYK

The following will give you more understanding of the differences of Pantone (PMS) and CMYK ("Full colour")

CMYK _________________________________________________
short for Cyan-Magenta-Yellow-Black, is a colour model in which all colours are described as a mixture of these four process colours.
This allows around 10,000,000 colour shades to choose from. CMYK is the standard colour model used in offset printing for full-colour documents.
CMYK PROs:

  • Full colour printing
  • Generally cheaper to print (than 2 spot colours)

CMYK CONs:

  • Lack of colour vibrancy ... some colours can be dull compared to what
    Pantone can offer
  • Cannot guarantee consistency of colours, so colour may vary from print to print, printer to printer

PANTONE®___________________________________________
is a standardized colour matching system, utilizing the Pantone numbering system for identifying colours. The Pantone Solid palette consists of 1,867 colours to choose from, identified by three or four digit numbers, followed by a C, U, Or M suffix.. (C= Coated Paper), (U= Uncoated Paper) (M=Matte Paper).
PANTONE® PROs:

  • Colour consistency - the colour you choose, is the colour you get regardless of print run or printer
  • Vibrant colour & metallic ink options

PANTONE® CONs:

  • Less colour range
  • More expensive per colour

PMS Swatch & Samples

When printed, Pantone colours can differ greatly from CMYK or what you see on the screen. Alos as monitors are calibrated differently, the ONLY method of checking a pantone colour is a physical sample. This is a MUST if you want to check the colour before print.

Usually, a graphic designer will have a ‘swatch book’ which is essentially a book of the 1,867 printed colours in the SOLID UNCOATED range. Solid Uncoated is the only book that should be referenced for pantone printing.
Pantone Chips If you do not have access to one of these books, no problems. We have a ‘chips’ book that we can detach individual colour samples and post them to you. We send you the Pantone swatches colour(s) of your choice for $7ea. Add additional $20 for EXPRESS postage.
Be sure to ask for "Pantone SOLID UNcoated" and quote the number you require.
